Excerpt about the Rice Crew shoot down from "The Long Rangers" by Sam Britt: Lt. Chrles H. Shaffer (372nd) crashed one and one hald minutes after take off for unknown causes, and the plane exploded when it hit the water.

Information from Mission Report:

  • 27 May 1944 mission was to strike the beach defenses at Bosnek (Biak Island)
  • The pilot wass Lt. Shaffer
  • The plane crashed into the water shortly after takeoff.
  • All 11 crew members were lost (a standard crew was 10 therefore; the plane must have included an extra member for some reason).
