Japanese Emergency "Gagil-Tamil" Airstrip on Yap Island

The following pictures were taken of the Japanese emergency airstrip located on the Gagil-Tamil Municipality of Yap Island. The Japanese created this small airstrip due to the heavy damage that was inflicted on their main airstrip by American attacks. A few planes might have landed and taken off from the emergency airstrip; however, the American forces discovered the strip and began bombing the airstrip with the same intensity that they used to attack the main strip. We found numerous bomb craters throughout the length of the strip as well as Japanese wreckage including a small rail that was likely used to move materials up and down the strip.

Yukitoshi from Japan provided the following details: Construction of the Yap Second "Tamil" Airfield was begun by 205th Construction Unit from April 1944. Since the U.S. Forces landed at Saipan and Guam, the IJNAF units was diverted to some other purpose in another area. And air strikes of the U.S. Forces to Yap became intense. Therefore, construction work was stopped on July 25, 1944.
