Bob Husted shared the following article about his father, Lt. Robert Husted, who was a pilot with the 31st BS, 5th BG. The 5th BG were often on the same bases with the 307th BG and they flew many missions together. The newspaper clipping his mother saved is about a mission to Yap in June or July 1944 (he is trying to determine the actual date). The article describes how he saved his B-24 crew after being attacked by Zero’s over Yap and then losing two engines, brake controls and other damage. They dumped everything they could out of the plane and made it either back to their base or the closes base with only minor injuries. You can read the article by downloading the following PDF file:
