One of the first crash sites we found and identified in 2005 was a Marine VFM-122 Corsair flown by First Lt. Girvis Haltom, Jr. He was shot down while making a low strafing run against Japanese gun emplacements on October 24, 1944. I have been able to locate a lot of information (pictures, letters, documents, etc.) about Girvis (nickname was Snook's) over the years including talking to his wingman from the fateful day, Ed Zolnier. One of the first memorial sites we setup on Yap working with the Yap Visitor's Bureau was the site for Girvis located in Tafnith village, Kanifay Municipality. Tafnith village is directly westward side of the old Japanese airfield. The FG-1 wreckage was originally spread out over a large area throughout the village. Many of the largest pieces have been consolidated to the area near the all-weather informational sign and marble memorial plaque. I recently received the following message from his family:

"Good afternoon, We were visiting my 97 yr. old grandfather and talking about my daredevil uncle....Girvis "Snooks" Haltom and how he died. We started googling and found this site....amazing! Thanks for all you do for this site! Bob Cole"

More information about Girvis can be located at:
