The family of Pearl Gluck (widow of Martin Unger) advised me that Pearl recently passed away at the age of 93. Martin was the navigator on my uncle’s B-24. I had a memorable meeting with Pearl in September 2005 when we had dinner together in New York City with Martin’s sisters (Leona & Cecile) who had not seen Pearl since 1944. It was an unforgettable evening with the three women that I will never forget. They spent the evening reminiscing Martin and the short few years that two families were together during the war. The three women got together the next winter at Cecile’s apartment with my wife and daughter to hear about my first trip to Yap Island to search for the crew. Pearl stayed in touch with me for a few years and would call to check on my search efforts and to ask about Cherie and Genna. After living a full life, Pearl is sadly now part of the ages. However, thanks to Martin’s family we can remember Martin and Pearl via the letters I was able to copy from the last two years of his life, pictures and a home movie that shows Martin with Pearl and the Unger family in January 1944 before he departed for the Pacific.
