Here's a very interesting article from a Fredericksburg, VA newspaper The Free Lance-Star dated April 11, 1944. It describes the first American carrier raid on Yap, however, like most newspapers article of the time it is overly optimistic that the raid was a huge success. Although no American planes were lost on this attack, thirty-six plus planes would be lost over Yap in the subsequent year and a half with the loss of hundreds of men. The article makes it sound as if the raid took the Japanese on Yap out of the war when in fact they completed the airfield a few months after this attack. My uncle's crew was lost three months after this raid.
